Behind the Scenes: What a Solar Carport Commissioning Day Actually Looks Like
The four hours between "structure bolted down" and "earning your first kilowatt-hour" — and why the boring paperwork matters more than the photo op.

Everyone takes a photo when the panels go up. Almost nobody photographs what happens on commissioning day. That is a shame, because this is the day the system goes from capital expense to revenue-generating asset.
06:30 — Pre-flight
The SIPO site team arrives before sunrise. Final torque checks on every DC connection. Insulation resistance (megger) tests on each string. IV curve trace on a representative sample of the 15 Polaris 540W modules.
The CEC-accredited installer confirms the ballasted frame has zero movement after 48 hours of settling — no roof penetration means no waterproofing risk, but the mass must be right.
09:00 — DNSP witness test
An Energex engineer (in Queensland) or the local DNSP representative arrives to witness anti-islanding protection, voltage and frequency trip settings, and grid synchronisation. This is the bit where the paperwork either works or it does not.
The CEC compliance certificate, single-line diagram, and AS/NZS 5033 test records are on the table. The client is not present — they are at work. We handle the entire witness test on their behalf.
11:00 — First export
The inverter comes online. We watch the export meter tick over for the first time. The hybrid inverter's app pushes the first live data to the client's phone: 7.2 kW instantaneous, battery port idle, EV charger ready.
Coffee. Quiet satisfaction. The structure that was a steel frame six hours ago is now a power station.
13:00 — Handover pack
- O&M manual (specific to the 8.1 kW Polaris array)
- Single-line diagram and electrical layout
- CEC compliance certificate and warranty registrations
- STC assignment paperwork (if applicable)
- Monitoring portal credentials and app walkthrough
- Cleaning and maintenance schedule (annual hose-down, bi-annual professional inspection)
The client signs. The asset is live.
The Next Day
The client's first full day of generation: 42 kWh. Self-consumed: 18 kWh (pool pump, EV charger, air conditioning). Exported: 24 kWh. First FiT credit will appear on their next bill.
Solar is a 25-year relationship. Commissioning day is the wedding — the marriage starts tomorrow.
